Feeling constantly tired, headaches, or digestive issues? It might be stress. Dr. Bhushan Chaudhari, a consultant psychiatrist in Pune, explains how stress affects your entire health and what you can do about it.

We often use the word "stress" casually to describe a busy day or a tough week. But when that feeling becomes a constant companion, it stops being just a mood and starts becoming a medical concern. As a psychiatrist practicing in busy metropolitan city, I see daily how unchecked stress silently erodes our overall well-being.

Think of stress as your body’s internal alarm system. It’s useful in short bursts—helping you meet a deadline or avoid danger. However, when this alarm rings non-stop, it begins to damage the very system it was designed to protect.

How Does Stress Affect Your Physical Health?

When you're stressed, your body releases hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. This is the "fight or flight" response. While helpful momentarily, chronic exposure leads to:

  1. A Weakened Immune System: Ever noticed you catch a cold more easily during exam season or a hectic project? Chronic stress makes you more susceptible to infections.

  2. Heart and Blood Pressure Issues: Constant stress keeps your heart rate elevated and can contribute to high blood pressure, increasing the long-term risk of heart disease.

  3. Digestive Problems: Your gut is extremely sensitive to stress hormones. This can manifest as stomach aches, acidity, indigestion, or Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

  4. Aches and Pains: Unexplained headaches, muscle tension (especially in the neck and shoulders), and back pain are very common physical complaints of stress.

  5. Sleep disturbances: You might have trouble falling asleep, wake up frequently, or still feel tired after a full night's rest.

The Impact on Your Mind and Mood

The mental effects are just as significant and often what bring people to my clinic:

  • Anxiety and Worry: A constant feeling of dread or unease about everyday situations.

  • Irritability and Anger: Small annoyances feel like major crises, straining relationships with family and colleagues.

  • Lack of Focus: Finding it hard to concentrate on tasks or make simple decisions.

  • Feeling Overwhelmed or Low: Persistent stress is a key contributor to feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and can be a trigger for depression.

What Can You Do? Simple Steps to Manage Stress

The good news is that you can calm your body’s alarm system. You don’t need elaborate solutions to start.

  1. Identify the Source: Take a moment to note what triggers your stress. Is it work, family responsibilities, financial worries, or health concerns? Acknowledging it is the first step.

  2. Breathe Deeply: When you feel overwhelmed, pause. Take 5-10 slow, deep breaths. This simple act signals your nervous system to relax.

  3. Move Your Body: You don't need a gym. A daily 20-30 minute brisk walk in a nearby park or even around your home can work wonders for your mood and health.

  4. Connect with Others: Talk to a friend, family member, or your partner. Sharing your worries can significantly lighten the load.

  5. Prioritize Sleep: Try to maintain a regular sleep schedule. Create a calming bedtime routine, avoiding phones and screens an hour before sleep.

When to Seek Professional Help

If you’ve tried these steps but still feel overwhelmed, or if stress is severely impacting your daily life, health, and happiness, please know that you are not alone. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

As a psychiatrist, I can help you with techniques and strategies tailored to your life to manage stress effectively. Sometimes, talking therapies (counselling) can provide the tools to change thought patterns, and in some cases, short-term medication can help reset the body's stress response.

Your mental health is the foundation of your physical health. Taking care of it is not a luxury; it is a necessity.
